10 Nov Volunteer Spotlight – Connor Velasco
My name is Connor Velasco and I am an Arrow of Light Cub Scout with Unit 9 of Pack 56. For the Building a Better World Adventure, one of our steps is to lead our den in an activity. I decided I wanted to do a community service project for children in the area. Halloween has always been a big holiday in my family, so I decided I wanted to create a Halloween costume closet for children at the Augusta Dream Center and the Ronald McDonald house. I wanted to help children in Augusta have the best Halloween ever.
I created a PowerPoint explaining to my den what I wanted to do and then asked my school, Stevens Creek Elementary if they would send out a flyer I created to the whole school asking for costume donations. My parents also posted my flyer on the Next-Door App.
I asked my den to either donate a costume or help me distribute them. Since September 20th I was able to get 65 gently used costumes for the Augusta Dream Center and 14 new costumes for the Ronald McDonald House including two that were purchased by the Augusta Mayor, Hardie Davis. Mayor Davis learned about my project when we met with him as another requirement for Building a Better World and he asked if he could help by buying some costumes. He bought Captain America and Elsa from Frozen which are being donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
